"A surrogate model of numerical relativity waveforms for generically precessing binary black hole mergers," Jonathan Blackman, (Caltech TAPIR)

Abstract: Abstract Numerical relativity (NR) simulations of binary black hole systems lead to very accurate gravitational waveforms. While this high accuracy may be needed for parameter estimation and tests of general relativity for future detections with high SNR, NR simulations are prohibitively expensive for these tasks. I will describe a surrogate model for binary black hole waveforms from NR simulations that has recently been built, and which includes all intrinsic parameters unlike previous NR surrogate models.Surrogate waveform models reproduce the results of a slow waveform model (NR, in this case), by quickly interpolating precomputed waveforms. This surrogate model is approximately as accurate as the underlying NR waveforms, and can be evaluated in ~50 milliseconds compared to weeks for performing a new NR simulation.

We plan to broadcast these talks using TeamSpeak. Use a sub-channel of LIGO Lab called "LIGO Seminar", which is not password protected. NOTE: These and all other scheduled LIGO seminars are listed on the LIGO Laboratory seminar calendar for convenient reference.
