from Theory to Practice"

Abstract
Propagation of light in artificially periodic dielectric structures causes these waves to act very differently than in uniform media and to manifest many of the features of the behavior of electrons in periodic crystals such as forbidden gaps and localized defects.  The resulting new understanding of this behavior has led to numerous applications -some very important in optical fiber communication- and to new predicted and observed phenomena.
