This reading assignment is obsolete – applies to old Ph 20.7, now Ph 22.0

General comments

This week's assignment is the last one for Ph 20. Hooray! It combines all the knowledge you've learned this term.

It is intended that this set be completed in Python, except for question 5, in which you can reproduce your results in Mathematica, in order to compare the methods' efficiency at both development and run time.

When doing this set, it is recommended to plan your functions before you implement them, and to use small testable functions to build up bigger, more versatile functions…

Convergence plots should be displayed as Log-Log plots or Log-Linear plots, to demonstrate straight lines and enable factors to be read directly from them.

If you intend to do Ph 21 in the future, your algorithms from this set will be re-used, so PLEASE do them well enough!

For interest's sake, the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar is the first test of GR in medium-strength fields. The binary system is slowly losing energy to gravitational radiation, causing the period to increase slowly over time, in perfect accordance with GR. The discovery of this fact earned a Nobel prize.
